margin-right: 1em;">
My buddy Jesse came with me and we left Sunny Arizona on Wednesday after work. We drove the entire 14 hours through the night. Leaving Arizona the temp was in the mid 90's, we drove though the mountains of Utah with snow and ice. This did little to damped our spirits, in fact, it may had heightened my excitement since I enjoy fishing in the colder temps with snow and rain falling around me. This was is the area that I grew up in, so the drive up was full of memories and recalling the experiences of my younger years.

If you have never been to the Flaming Gorge area, then you are missing out, This was Jesse' first time there and I think he enjoyed the experience. The scenery alone is worth the trip, and having one of the best fishing rivers in the west and an amazing lake just make it that much better. The timing of the trip was such that we could hit some of the spawning runs on the Gorge, right before spring runoff made the fishing impossible. Well, to make a long story short, the fishing was awesome, and the trip (28 hours of driving and 3 straight days of fishing) was well worth the year of planning and anticipation.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wk1CXk6hIUs/TctjG0oT-pI/AAAAAAAABN8/wvLn-iTVmBE/s1600/Conner+2+018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; We spent 2 days on the Gorge and 1 day on the Green. It had been a long time since I have caught some large trout, and on this trip I caught more large fish than I have in the past 10 years. The fish were big, strong, amazing colored, and very willing to take our egg patterns that we were throwing to them. He are a few pics of the better fish.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I don't know if I like planning so far in advance, because it seems like I have been waiting for April to get here for a long time. But by planning so far in advance, no one has an excuse of backing out of the trip because something came up. Hopefully this will be the first of many yearly trips with family and friends. Which brings up another downfall of planning a trip so far in advance. The closer I get to the trip, the more I have fishing on my mind. It was a quick trip but I was able to get a little fishing in. It was very cold while we were up there. -21 Degrees was recorded one morning. This made fishing a little harder, but somehow, standing in a river workin hard to get a strike just makes the weather warmer.
While up in Logan I spent a morning on the Logan river. I have not fished this river much, especially in the winter, so this was a learning experience. A couple of hours were spent with my dad landing the only fish of the day. But it was nice just to be outside.

I love the Logan River and Canyon, I just need to get more familiar with fishing it, especailly in the winter.

I also was able to head up to the Green River below the Flaming Gorge Dam. These are my home stomping grounds and I feel a lot more comfortable fishing here. Plus it was about 20 degrees warmer up on the mountain than it was where we were staying. We fished a few different egg patterns and then some midge nymph patterns. My dad landed a few fish right off on egg patterns, but the rest of the fish of the day were on midges. It took me a while to land my first fish. I had spotted 2 trout in a nice little run, and I made multiple casts to them without even a look. I could tell that they were feeding, so I had my dad come over to make a cast to them. On his second cast he landed the closer of the two trout. So while he was releasing that fish, I changed over to the midge pattern that he was using. After a couple of drifts I landed the second fish, which was the bigger of the two. A nice little 18'' Brown. He did not fight very much, but it was just satisfying to see the take and to feel the fish on the end of my line.
Later in the day the fish started to really start feeding on the surface. Unfortunatly we did not have any patterns that matched what they were taking. I did try a griffins gnat that did bring in a few stocker rainbows, but I was never able to land some of the big trout that were cruzing and sipping midges. To bad, It was fun to come to a slow eddie or pool and see dozens of fish nosing up to take midges off of the surface. I took a short video of it and I will get that posted.

Round 2 1/2, Pole Creek and the Uintah Mountains

So, one of the things that I wanted to do this summer was take my kids and give them their first taste of fly fishing. We did not fish for long (the kids got cold), but it was fun having them walk by me and get excited about fishing. My son did not want to use anything but his pole. He did not even want me to cast for him, but was just content to pretend cast and reel. But we finally got them away from the lake and over to the little stream. It still brings a smile to my face remembering their reactions.

It was just great to be up in the mountains. I hope that my kids enjoy it when they are older as much as they do now. I could seriously live up here during the summer. The weather was a little over cast and cloudy and we got some rain coming off the mountain. But it was perfect weather when we first got up there.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/TFzGgPXC-JI/AAAAAAAABCw/7bKhhdEKPBg/s1600/IMG_1572.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I hope this is the first of many trips with them.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/TFzGpbImH0I/AAAAAAAABC4/JlF3c2WMO2c/s1600/IMG_1575.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; (Well, maybe not, but I think so). Both of the kids were so excited to go fishing. The almost could not wait to let me put a lure on their hooks. My daughter wanted to carry her pole everywhere, and the little guy did not even want me to help him cast. Finally I just had to give him his pole, and he sat there acting like he was casting and then justed reeled against the drag. There was nothing happening in the lake, so I rigged up the fly rod and we took a little hike to the stream flowing into the lake.

Look at that concentration.

When we got to the stream, all the kids wanted to see the fish, but they kept scaring them away. I finally got them all to stand behind me, and we all would sneak up to the stream together. It was fun watching the kids sneak with me. The very first fish broke me off (I was a little upset at that), so as I rigged up again I told the kids to stay behind me to not scare the fish so I could catch the fish who stole my hook. I never could get him back, but the next fish was a bit of a surprise.

I hooked a nice little 12" rainbow that was had come up from the lake. It was a nice little fish for this little stream. The kids got so excited (including Hudson). And I was excited to for this nice little fish.

I thought both of the kids would love to touch the fish, my daughter could not keep her hands off it, but my son would not touch it ( I thought if anything it would be the other way around). But they both loved to look at it. All the kids even paid attention as I explained the different types of fish and how to tell them apart by their markings. We caught the rainbow, a nice little brookie, and a tiny little brown.

A nice little fish, took me by surprise. He hit the fly like he was a shark, and really took off, I was not expecting that, so I was really excited, which got the kids really excited.

More sneaking up on the fish. I hope there are many more of these moments. Nothing better then being with my family in one of my favorite places.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/TFzINj4qhwI/AAAAAAAABEA/v3AuulUm8vs/s1600/IMG_1595.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I wanted to let some of the older kids have a turn bringing the fish in, but the were mostly so small that there was not much to bring in. But a couple of them got turns.

I am also very glad that we have grandparents on both sides that love the outdoors and enjoy doing things with their kids and grandkids. Not many family today would pack up 10+ kids and take an hour plus drive up into the mountains for picnics and fishing, but that is one of the most desired activities in this family.

This trip only counted as a 1/2 trip since we only fished for maybe 20 minutes, but it was probably one of the most enjoyable trips, that is until the cold wind started and the kids all got tired and cold at the same time and then we had to hike out carrying all of the kids. But it was fun while it lasted.

Round 2, West Fork of the White Rocks River

This river is probably one of the best fishing streams that I have ever fished. There is a slight hike involved, but if you want to catch a lot of wild Brook and Cut throat trout, this is the place. The average size of the fish here is 8-10", which is a lot larger than most averages in these high Uintah Mountain streams. And you have a chance to catch some really nice fish (see earlier posts).
This trip, my father in law and I decided we wanted to hike in around some large boulder fields that have blocked our fishing further down the river. So we had a pretty good hike on our hands today, but it was great to be up in the mountains, and the fishing was amazing as always. I also got to introduce my puppy to the place where I grew up. He loved it and was a great fishing companion. Hopefully this was the first of many trips with him.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/TFtgWQ8TTzI/AAAAAAAABBQ/mrF5OeMFG_g/s1600/IMG_1541.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Just wish it had a bit more access, but that helps to keep it pristine like it is.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/TFtg-fhS_iI/AAAAAAAABBo/a-Nm4xMI4uk/s1600/IMG_1548.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The pictures do not do them justice.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/TFthtmQv7MI/AAAAAAAABCI/HptriK924UY/s1600/IMG_1558.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; This is the first time he has been out of Arizona, but I think he likes the cool Utah weather. It took him a while to get the hang of jumping over all the down timber and he did not like to cross the stream. But he did very good climbing up and down the steep slopes and really enjoyed being up in the mountains.

Hudson was also very interested in the fish. He would stand right by us and wait till we would catch a fish, then he would stay right by us and we un-hooked and release them. He would even watch us cast back and forth like he was looking for the fish to come out of the water. (Yes, the fish literally come out of the water almost as fast as you can cast.

This was the big fish of the trip. I was not holding him very well, but he was about a 14" Cut, very nice fish.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/TFth20RcSNI/AAAAAAAABCQ/KLF-AfY9nqI/s1600/IMG_1561.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; So I was wondering what was going on as my Father in Law landed 3 before I even got my fly in the water. So I was stripping in my line for another cast and WHAM!. The fish just started attacking my fly. I landed at least 6 out of that little hole, and I probably could have landed more, but I started feeling sorry for them. I would just drag my fly across the water and the fish would hit it. The rest of the river was not like this, only this hole. But it sure was a fun way to start of a great day of fishing.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; This week I was in Roosevelt so I wanted to take a trip up to two of my favorite places, and also hit one of the spots that I just cannot figure out.

Jones hole is up on Diamond Mountain near the green river. There is a fish hatchery up there but the fish are all mostly wild trout from the river. The stream is feed from underground streams and holds some very large trout. I have never done very well up there, and I usually get frustrated because I hear of some big fish coming out of there (I have even seen a few pictures). But yet it is one of those places that I just cannot figure out. I have been up there numerous times and I love to be in the canyon, and I love hiking the stream. And one of these days I am going to figure out those big browns and Rainbows. We did catch a few. My biggest was about 12". I did hook a nice Rainbow (I think around 16"), but as soon as I hooked him he took off up stream and ran right under a overhanging tree. Yes, be broke me off and I was ticked because he probably would have been the biggest fish that I have ever landed there.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/TFtd_xMF_VI/AAAAAAAABBA/QqpN63R00ko/s1600/IMG_1531.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Streams and Rivers have always been my favorite water to fish. I don't really know why, it is where I feel the most comfortable. Many times when I go out on a lake or pond, I feel inadequate and really do not know what I am doing.

Lately, my dad has been going back and revisiting some of his childhood fishing spots in Idaho, and has been re-learning how to fish still water. I have figured that I need to learn how, partly because some of the best fishing here in Arizona is on still water. And second because my Dad sends me pictures like these.

So, I was finally able to get out and attempt to curb my fishing craving that I have had for a couple of months now. I think this trip had been planned and postponed at least a couple of times. So it was good to finally get out. We decided to go up to Oak Creek after doing some research. We knew that if we did not catch any fish we would at least be in a very scenic part of the state. My good friend Jesse went with me. Luckily, we were able to catch some fish, so the scenery was just a bonus.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/S_3WvhM6g3I/AAAAAAAAA5M/4O3DsTsbWsA/s1600/IMG_1213.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; However, we were two of the hundreds of people there this weekend. And the lower parts of the river were the most popular, this is one of the few sections without people swimming in it. So there was not much fishinig to be had here.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/S_3YUlLIK2I/AAAAAAAAA5c/JnvDWHieV2g/s1600/IMG_1165.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The campground was full the night we got there so we found a place off to the side of the road and slept in the back of Jesse's truck. We got up early and got in line at the camgground to make sure we had a spot.
The upper part of the river was a lot less crowded . Although we did have to compete with some sort of youth group, and a bunch of spin fisherman around the campgrounds and major parking spots. We were able to find some areas of the river that we could fish on.

The water in the river was some of the clearest that I have ever seen. Making for some tough fishing. This was combat fishing to its most intense. Make one wrong move, and those brown trout went flying out of their hiding places. You could not see them until they were spooked or they hit your hook. We spooked most of the ones that we saw, but we were able to fool a couple of them.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/S_3aQR-_CtI/AAAAAAAAA5s/8qdpAczRPbo/s1600/IMG_1178.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; We did not get any good pictures of fish on this trip. Most of the fish we landed were in the 4-8'' range. My big fish of the trip was about 12'', I think Jesse had one about the same size. We also caught of few of the stocked rainbows that were in the river.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/S_3aw5x570I/AAAAAAAAA58/i8SWRMHGdbI/s1600/IMG_1197.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Needless to say both of us had some slips as we attempted to not spook the fish, watch our back casts, make good casts, and watch our footing.

We fished with a dry dropper combination for most of the time. The mornings and evenings they were on both the dry and dropper about the same. During the day we switched to only a dry. They hit the stimulator mostly. With hits also coming on the caddis and adams. We fished mostly some pheasant tails nymphs underneath.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IxjDGdh9oXY/S_3dCGH06BI/AAAAAAAAA6c/ej0Nm8ClmkU/s1600/IMG_1181.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Right as we were getting ready to take his picture, I dropped him. Sorry, you will have to take my word for it. There were a few hatches coming off. Mostly small midges and some caddis. The fish really never got up on the hatches very heavy. There were a few holes were they got fairly active and we had some success. We just felt good any time we could even induce a strike.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Being out in Nature, being able to see new places, enjoying the weather (Yes, even the cold), watching wildlife. I cannot think of very many thing that are better than that, and if you are able to catch fish on top of that...... On of the things that I do enjoy more than fishing is being with my family, and I hope someday that my kids will enjoy going with me to catch a fish. I haven't taken them yet, but plan to this next summer. They already love camping and hiking. I also want to be able to enjoy these experiences with my extended family and nieces and nephews. Camping, being outdoors, and fishing is something that both sides of my family enjoy, and I hope to be able to do this for a long time. My niece Hadlee has been fishing recently (I will have to get the details of the trip), but I thought she should be on my blog. Nice catch Hadlee Sue

Christmas in Utah!!

First off, Merry Christmas to everyone!

We are up in Utah again to be with family for Christmas and New Year. And of course being this close to the Green I had to make a trip. I almost did not go because I could not find anyone to go with me, and because it is a lot colder here than in Tucson AZ. Luckily a face book post caught the attention of my old high school buddy Tyler, and we then talked another buddy Broc into heading up to the Green for a morning trip. It was actually a bit warmer up in Flaming Gorge than in Roosevelt, and being waist deep in the Green just felt great. Thanks Tyler and Broc for going with me. We only fished for a few hours, and it took us a little while to figure out what was going on. We ended up catching most of the fish on copper johns, and I landed a few on an egg pattern. The fishing was getting better right when we left, they lowered the flows to about 900 and we were able to get into a few. We didn't catch anything big, although the Rainbow that I landed is probably the biggest fish I have landed on the Green for a while. But it was fun, I think I missed as many as I landed. I was having trouble setting the hook. But it was a fun trip. I think I am going to have to make this a tradition, so next year you are all invited.
Broc landed a nice Brown for his first fish

My Rainbow

November Utah Trip

I was able to take 2 days in our trip to Utah to get some fishing in. Friday the 20th I went with my Father and brother in law up to Jones hole on Diamond Mtn. It was a great day for fishing, just someone forgot to tell the fish. My uncle had gone up the week before and said that he had done great, which is evident by the nice Rainbow he landed there. So I was pretty excited. We to there and the first hole I casted in I landed two fish, one decent Rainbow and a little Brown. So I was pretty excited. But the rest of the day went pretty slow. I think I landed maybe 4 more fish, nothing of any size. Both John and Cody did a little better but nothing spectacular. The fish were everywhere, just not eating what we were throwing at them. This time of year the Browns are spawning there and are usually pretty aggressive. I threw a little jigaglow egg pattern most of the day, landed all my fish on that. I did have a few hits on the big dry I had on top. Cody and John had luck throwing spinners. The most exciting part of the day was in the last hole on the way back to the truck. I hooked a nice fish but he broke me off. I never really got a good look at him but he felt really nice. So I called it good after that. Just nice to be up in the mountains.

My Uncle Guy and his Big Rainbow

Saturday my Dad and Brother drove up from Logan and we floated down the Green. There were actualy quite a few other boats on the river. The morning was perfect, actually really nice for that time of year. We had come prepared for snow and had to take off all our cold gear. Around 11 though a cold wind started blowing and the temperature dropped. Again, the fishing was not super hot. I think I landed around 8 fish, Ryan and Dad about half of that. We did double up once with both Ryan and my dad landing 16-17 inch browns. Again we fished with Egg patterns but had a few hits on the Dry, I think my dad landed one on the Dry, a big foam ant pattern. It was just really nice to be up on the Green after more than 2 years. We got to Little Hole just as the storm blew in and we drove off the mountain in a snow Storm. But a fun Trip.

All of the fish were almost identical in size, 16-17 inch fish. West fork of the White Rocks River.

The White Rocks River is in the Uintah Mountains. It flows from Chepata lake. There is a trail that cuts down to the river about 4-5 miles below the dam. It is a pretty easy hike to get to the River. It is about a half hour hike from the road. Hiking along the river is a little tougher. Part of the river is open and easy walking. other parts go through rock slides or steep canyons where you have to either get up higher or walk in the river. The river was running pretty high so wading was not easy. There were some bugs out. We saw some big Caddis which is always a good sign. But I don't think it matters what you use. The fish hit anything that you threw to them. The water is so fast that if you can hit your spots there are at least a couple of fish in every little hole and eddie. There are some parts of the river that have some nice runs where is you can make good casts and mend nicely you can get some good runs. John would hit every little slow spot in the river. Behind rocks or back eddies on the bank. If you can get your fly into the whole you will probably catch fish. We used a variety of flies, but we ended up just using the biggest flies (to discourage the little fish from hitting) that seemed to float the best and take a beating. We caught a lot of fish.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fishermanlog.blogspot.com/2009/07/july-11-2009-west-fork-of-white-rocks.html' title='July 11, 2009. Last summer John and I went up to the west fork of the White Rocks river and had a blast. Even though there was still a lot of runoff the fishing was great. I don't think it would have matter what you were fishing with, you were going to catch fish. I ended up just putting on a big cicada pattern that would float and take a beating.
This was the catch of the day. But good job dad for persevering.

Fishing withdrawals

So, we have recently moved to Tucson Arizona. Not much fly fishing or any fishing for that matter. Yet I now have time to actually spend fishing. So as time and opportunity permit, I will now begin to update and post. Please feel free to send me your stories. I like to look at pictures and hear a good fish tale.

Getting Started

My husband started this blog and hasn't done a thing to it.. if you happen to stumble upon it then this was his original intention... He wanted to create a site for all the die hard fishermen out there to get/give information about the places you've fishing. For example: location, time of year, what you caught, what you used, pictures, suggestions, ect. Leave a comment and let him know its a great idea!!
