Wishin I was Fishin

So, here is a fun little piece on the Green River.  It seems like I have not been up there in ages.  But if you are up there in the fall, late fall, and winter, fishing can still be awesome.

Pelican Lake, UT

So, my brother has been able to get out a few times this year to Pelican.   Usually, the lake is pretty hot in June, but fishing is still pretty good even late in the summer.   This can be a fun lake to fish,  I have had times out on this lake where you literally can catch a fish on every cast.    We mostly use poppers, but my brother and his buddies have been trying to get to the bigger bass and have tried some different techniques.  I'm a little jelous that he gets to go out so often, but thanks for sharing the pics.

Its in the blood

I'm sorry, I actually torture myself by watching these types of videos, and not being able to do this like I want to.   I could do this everyday all day.   If this does not excite you, then I don't know what would.

This looks like fun

Feed The Itch

Well, if you cannot get out and fish,  I guess the next best thing is watching videos and viewing pictures and then dream about fishing.

More of our April Trip

So, this little slide show starts to show the amount of fish that were caught on out trip.   Still doesn't quite do the trip justice,  but it is starting to come close.

An attempt at a video

So there is only so much you can do with Windows Movie maker.  But I wanted to put some more of our trip on here for people to see.   I actually really enjoy doing it,  just the program wasn't able to put all of my awesome ideas into the production.   But this will work,  Let me know what you think.  And if you have any suggestions on good (cheap or free) movie editing software, let me know.   I could really get into this.

April Fishing Trip

So I am finally getting around to posting about our trip that we did in April.  I had been planning this trip for a year since hearing stories of  the amazing fishing from my uncle and father in law.   The anticipation of this trip was compounded by the fact that I had not been fishing since December, so I spent time looking at pictures and building up in my mind how good this trip was going to be.   The date finally arrived, and our trip to Flaming Gorge Utah began.
My buddy Jesse came with me and we left Sunny Arizona on Wednesday after work.   We drove the entire 14 hours through the night.  Leaving Arizona the temp was in the mid 90's, we drove though the mountains of Utah with snow and ice.   This did little to damped our spirits, in fact, it may had heightened my excitement since I enjoy fishing in the colder temps with snow and rain falling around me.    This was is the area that I grew up in, so the drive up was full of memories and recalling the experiences of my younger years.

If you have never been to the Flaming Gorge area, then you are missing out,  This was Jesse' first time there and I think he enjoyed the experience.  The scenery alone is worth the trip,  and having one of the best fishing rivers in the west and an amazing lake just make it that much better.  The timing of the trip was such that we could hit some of the spawning runs on the Gorge, right before spring runoff made the fishing impossible.     Well, to make a long story short,  the fishing was awesome, and the trip (28 hours of driving and 3 straight days of fishing) was well worth the year of planning and anticipation.

The fishing was awesome.  We spent 2 days on the Gorge and 1 day on the Green.   It had been a long time since I have caught some large trout, and on this trip I caught more large fish than I have in the past 10 years.   The fish were big, strong, amazing colored, and very willing to take our egg patterns that we were throwing to them.   He are a few pics of the better fish.

I am putting together a video of the trip, so stay tuned

Going Fishing

So here are some videos and an article of the Green River in Utah.  I have been planning a trip back there for almost a year now.  Thought I would share these,  thought they were pretty neat.

Trip Planning

So, I have been planning a trip for almost a year now to take a few days and head up to Utah.    I don't know if I like planning so far in advance, because it seems like I have been waiting for April to get here for a long time.   But by planning so far in advance, no one has an excuse of backing out of the trip because something came up.   Hopefully this will be the first of many yearly trips with family and friends.    Which brings up another downfall of planning a trip so far in advance.  The closer I get to the trip, the more I have fishing on my mind.  But hey, browsing blogs and you tube can give you ideas for future trips,  so here are a few that I would like to do someday.   WARNING! These videos may give you the fishing fever.

Utah Dec 2010 Trip Continued

Here are some pictures from the Green

Utah Trip Dec 2010

We headed up to Utah for the Holiday season to spend time with family.  It was a quick trip but I was able to get a little fishing in.   It was very cold while we were up there.   -21 Degrees was recorded one morning.   This made fishing a little harder,  but somehow, standing in a river workin hard to get a strike just makes the weather warmer.
While up in Logan I spent a morning on the Logan river.   I have not fished this river much,  especially in the winter, so this was a learning experience.   A couple of hours were spent with my dad landing the only fish of the day.    But it was nice just to be outside.

I love the Logan River and Canyon,  I just need to get more familiar with fishing it, especailly in the winter.

I also was able to head up to the Green River below the Flaming Gorge Dam.    These are my home stomping grounds and I feel a lot more comfortable fishing here.   Plus it was about 20 degrees warmer up on the mountain than it was where we were staying.    We fished a few different egg patterns and then some midge nymph patterns.  My dad landed a few fish right off on egg patterns,  but the rest of the fish of the day were on midges.      It took me a while to land my first fish.   I had spotted 2 trout in a nice little run, and I made multiple casts to them without even a look.  I could tell that they were feeding, so I had my dad come over to make a cast to them.  On his second cast he landed the closer of the two trout.  So while he was releasing that fish, I changed over to the midge pattern that he was using.  After a couple of drifts I landed the second fish, which was the bigger of the two.  A nice little 18'' Brown.  He did not fight very much, but it was just satisfying to see the take and to feel the fish on the end of my line.
Later in the day the fish started to really start feeding on the surface.  Unfortunatly we did not have any patterns that matched what they were taking.   I did try a griffins gnat that did bring in a few stocker rainbows,  but I was never able to land some of the big trout that were cruzing and sipping midges.  To bad,  It was fun to come to a slow eddie or pool and see dozens of fish nosing up to take midges off of the surface.  I took a short video of it and I will get that posted.
